Starting on 1st January 2017, for the first time since its accession to the European Union (EU) in 2004, Malta will assume the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union. It will take over the Presidency in a very complex period for the EU integration. Malta is the last Mediterranean country to hold the Presidency before 2020, which represents an opportunity for the region.
The three priorities of Malta's Presidency will feed into the larger Europe 2020 Strategy, focussing on Mediterranean, Maritime and Migration. High-Level Conferences on Corporate Governance, Circular Economy, Urbanisation, Access to Finance and more will be planned under the auspices of the Maltese Presidency which will gather key stakeholders from national governments, corporate and civil society.
